"MY DREAMS" SCREEN PRINT

As I've hinted w the name of my blog, I am a bit of a daydreamer. I tend to really wake up at night and sometimes, days seem like dreams. I've created illustration that represents my dreams and with using UV sensitive ink expressed how they keep appearing and disappearing. Being a daydreamer, they are really only visible in the daytime - magic I say

CAPOEIRA POSTER

A rough sketch of Capoeira poster.

MOD POSTER: MOD WORLD

As everything else at the mo this is work in progress. I'm just working on getting loads of ideas which will be refined later on. This is third and the last in the series of Mod posters, this time about Mod World - Mod fashion. Ladies in their cool outfits and guys on their scooter with the newspaper cut out about what do mods wear/buy. Simple as that. Awaiting the screen print studio.
////////// A week later - maybe looks better without
red and blue stripes?//////////////////////////

MARTIAL ARTS VS. B-BOYS

I'm very much into old school Hip Hop music/culture so I've decided to create a poster about something I find very interesting- the influence of martial arts, especially Kung Fu (which boomed in the US in the 70s when hip hop/ bboying started) and Capoeira, Brazilian martial arts. Some people would argue that's not true but I find it very likely it is.
There is a cool article here explaining the whole thing very convincingly. This poster is work in progress but it's getting closer to what I had in mind, but who knows, I might look at it tomorrow and turn it all around again. As everything else, I plan to screen print it when I get back into the studio. It is influenced by Blaxploitation, retro Kung Fu stuff and Hip Hop style. I've chosen two typefaces to start with but not sure if they totally do it for me - first one reminds me of 1968 Japanese Olympic Games poster and the other one is just very 70s. Will keep digging, there might be more appropriate stuff out there.

//////A day after- I have tried Impact typeface now and added a few other qualities. Looks better. There might be more changes coming up.//////

////////// A week after. I have taken the red thing away and just left the paper as a background. /////////////

And for the end, just a sentence from the above mentioned article-

"Kung fu films have been with B-Boying from the very beginning, since the street gangs watched the films on 42nd street. Kung fu movies will always be a part of hip hop culture. "

FOXY BROWN (1974)

Dawes: What do you really want?
Foxy Brown: Justice.
Dawes: Sister, I think what you're looking for is revenge.
Foxy Brown: You just handle the justice, and I'll handle the revenge myself.

COLLAGE: MODS VS ROCKERS

This is a collage I've just created and I plan to screen print it when I get back to uni. It's gonna be red, blue and b/w. It is the 2nd one in the Mod series, portraying the on going clashes between Mods and Rockers. Can't wait.

MOD SCREEN PRINTS READY!!

You remember when I said I'm gonna screen print Mod poster (the collage I've created in Photoshop)? This is it! It was a bit of a process as I had to print 4 layers but next time I'll do it much faster. Things I need to be aware of the next time:
- get the first layer straight ( I just did a random print without any pre-consideration)
- use bigger/straight acetate
- make a decision where exactly layers fit on the image
- be less messy

Besides the above mentioned, I am super pleased with the outcome as it looks exactly (well, better) that the one I have generated in Photoshop.
More to come!

SUMMER 2009

These are the two designs that I've created during my summer holidays. Very clear visions just popped into my head and were executed pretty quickly.

The designs had to be created based on advice quotes from previous Fda students.
"Relax, keep your mind open" seemed pretty cool to me so I imagined this guy meditating. The idea isn't something groundbreaking but I mainly wanted to play around with watercolours and hand drawn images in combination with digital images. I also experimented with Photoshop's blending options. I have payed attention to what kind of colours and elements I used as I wanted to create a relaxing, esoteric atmosphere. The image should express the message on a very instinctive level even without the use of words. The text was added in Indesign.

"step out of your comfort zone, be different" was the second advice I have chosen. I just wanted to be really simple with the message. I don't think there is much more needed to understand it.
I guess it was a bit influenced by Bauhaus art/design movement whose artists used lots of simplified forms and believed that function should dictate the form.
The old paper look is there to make it look like a page out of an old manual as the design has some informative qualities. The typeface I have chosen supports the message "be different" as the letter "n" is flipped around.
